Heard Sundays at 6 pm, this weekly radio series showcases the nation’s most exceptional pre-college age classical musicians.

Christopher O’Riley hosts each one-hour program, presenting five young performers or ensembles taped before a live audience in major performance centers across the country, such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Symphony Hall, and New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Listeners enjoy a continually fun and engaging program brimming with innovative features. From the Top includes renowned guest artists from a wide spectrum of the music world who perform and interact with the program’s young musicians. Guest artists on From the Top have included violinist Joshua Bell, bassist/composer Edgar Meyer, folk legend Judy Collins, fiddler Mark O’Connor, and clarinetist Richard Stoltzman.

Peppered throughout each episode are a variety of entertaining additions such as lively pre-produced segments presented by the show’s bright and spirited roving reporter, 12-year-old Caeli Smith. Amidst all of this, host Christopher O’Riley accompanies the young performers on the piano and even has been known to engage in a friendly game of “dueling pianos” in which he swaps classical “licks” to stump or be stumped by a guest pianist.

There is currently an open audition call for NPR’s From the Top performance at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, during the Gheens Great Expectations Extravaganza on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016.
