John Bull was one of the most successful keyboardists of his day, and a prolific composer whose compositions appeared in the seminal Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. He also wrote sacred music and was organist at Hereford Cathedral. John Bull may have also been a spy (!) for Queen Elizabeth, though this may never be proven (maybe he was a really good spy).
In our Featured Album, Basically Bull, Alan Feinberg presents the less-covert music of John Bull and his Elizabethan peers: William Byrd, Thomas Tomkins, Orlando Gibbons, John Blitheman and John Redford.
